A traditional Christmas feast with roast turkey and a steaming pudding seems to go best with an open fire and snow capped trees. With temperatures in most areas of Australia well into the thirties at Christmas, it makes more sense to stray from tradition and make the most of the summer sun.
One of Australia's favourite holiday destinations is Bali, so why not bring a taste of the tropics to your own back yard while celebrating the holiday period. So, Tara and Bec will turn a waterfront garden into a Balinese escape for the annual Our House Christmas get-together.
To keep everything clean and dry, matting is placed on the ground. We used pandanus mats from a bamboo specialist store. To make things more comfortable, we added large matching scatter cushions.
To decorate the table, you can use any Balinese style props. We chose seagrass placemats, beaded napkin rings, and two Balinese shadow puppets as the centre piece. For extra colour, we added some pink and white orchids.
The key to creating a themed party is to keep things comfortable and casual. You don't have to buy a lot of new props, simply bring some of your indoor furniture outside, and dress it up with scatter cushions, flowers and some small added extras.
To complete the Balinese themed Christmas party Reg whipped up some tropical treats for lunch. |
