Sylvia Lux, Sally McKenzie and Kym Sherry of Surry Cutters have begun 'Dotti Dogs', a successful dog grooming and dying hair service for the trendiest pooches in town.
Sylvia Lux has been hairdressing for 32 years and runs 'Surry Cutters', a salon in Surry Hills. Around five years ago, she dyed her poodle's hair to match a wacky Junior who was working for her at the time, so they could go in the Mardi Grass Lookalike competition together. She liked the idea, and began regularly dying her own poodles' hair.
Her three black poodles Phoebe, Brando and Rosco love to go to work with Sylvia. Their new hairstyles attracted quite a bit of attention, and soon clients began requesting the same treatment for their dogs. Sylvia and her friend Kym completed a dog-clipping course, and along with another friend Sally, decided to open a grooming and dying business. Sylvia put up a sign in the salon window and 'Dotti Dogs' was born.
Due to health regulations the dogs can't be dyed in the actual salon, so they use Sally's sunroom for some of the smaller dogs. For their larger clients, they have a pink spotted Hydrobath outside. It is around the size of a horse float, and contains a work bench, running water and tub. They can take this to the client's home for a visit.
The dyeing technique is much the same as it is for humans. The bleach is applied to the hair, and takes around 20 minutes to develop. The bleach is then washed out and the colour applied. Development time takes a further 10 minutes. The dog is blow dried, and its distinctive new look is complete. They don't bleach and dye puppies, they prefer to work with older dogs who are used to the grooming process.
Some of the more unusual requests have been the Aboriginal flag, Tasmanian tiger stripes, the Olympic flag and rings, hearts and shamrocks. Sally once dyed a horse with zebra stripes, and gave a labrador a pink tail and ears.
They have around 12 doggie clients that they dye regularly, with up to three or four appointments each week. And for the extra appearance conscious pet, they will also paint their claws and add colourful hair extensions.
Fresh from appearances in stories such as 'Scrubba-dub-dog' and 'Café Bones', celebrity guest, Boy McCombe will also be having his hair coloured in an exciting new style.
