We've looked at various pest control methods in the past on Our House, but any new way to detect termite activity is worth investigating. If you suspect you have termites it's important to check if your pest professional is using the latest technology for detection. The newest technique is using a Bugeye Technoscope. It's accurate and causes little structural damage, allowing you to see the termites live in action via a camera or computer. Of the 4,000 pest professionals in Australia, approximately 700 are using the Bugeye.
Things to ask your pest professional: - Are they insured? (you can sue them if they diagnose incorrectly) - Are they licensed? - Are they a member of AEPMA? (Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association) - What equipment do they use for detection of termites?
To detect termite activity, Glenn Nicolls, from The Professionals Pest Controllers, scans a moisture meter over the walls. Once an area is found that Glenn suspects could have termites, he requests permission to drill up to five 8mm holes in the wall. He then inserts the Bugeye Technoscope which gives a wide angleview of possible termite workings and assists in finding the point of entry. A digital camera is attached so the client can view the termites live on the screen. Then Glenn uses the Termitrac unit (microwave detection unit to detect movement of termites) to see if they are active or inactive. The next step is to put a treatment proposal together and quote.
