Responsible household waste disposal is more than just throwing out your rubbish. A tour of the Kimbriki Eco Garden with Environmental Consultant Peter Rutherford, will show you better ways to sort, manage and recycle your kitchen and garden waste, helping to preserve the environment and interest the kids too.
The Kimbriki Eco Garden has been created to help teach us ways to minimise garden and kitchen waste. This is done by reusing or recycling many of the products we would originally have thrown in the garbage. Food and garden waste is 50% of all household waste, which in the Northern suburbs of Sydney alone accumulates to 125,000 tonnes each year. It is important to manage this waste more efficiently because we are running out of places to put waste materials and organic waste creates acids when buried in landfills causing problems such as groundwater pollution and greenhouse gases.
A visit to the garden is free and can offer some great ideas on how to use recycled materials as landscape tools. It was constructed using around 435 tonnes of recycled soil, 20 tonnes of rock, 400 used tyres, 30 used railway sleepers, 80 tonnes of recycled road base, 8 tonnes of recycled terracotta tile, 6 pallets of pavers, 4 bathtubs and a spa.
They also have a competitive pricing policy for use of the landfill which has had great success in encouraging customers to think about both the economic and environmental benefits of conscious waste disposal. Customers who separate their waste get cheaper or free recycling costs and the centre is primarily for the residents of Warringah, Manly, Mosman and Pittwater.
Accepted Products for Recycling- Glass, plastic, paper etc
- Toys for repair which are given to the Smith Family
- Vegetation & untreated timber
- Metals
- Construction Materials
- Bricks, concrete and roof tiles
Kimbriki also offers educational classes throughout the year such as 'Composting, Worming and Mulching' and 'Water conservation and re-use in your garden'.
Approximately 70% of the refuse dropped off at Kimbriki is recycled, giving the centre another 50-60 years lifetime. They have been recycling for 10 years and otherwise would have since closed. Kimbriki hopes to continue heightening people's awareness of the importance of waste management and composting, and aims to branch out to educate more schools and communities.
