Francesca Heymann is a true Junk Chic. Whether it's roadside rubbish or a beautiful piece of furniture or work of art, you can be sure Francesca has filled her home with it. And she's got some great tips for us on how to transform old furniture into an artistic masterpiece.

Francesca became a 'Junk Chic' when she went to live in Germany about 15 years ago. With her daughter Isabella to care for, and her husband still studying, Francesca had little money to buy furniture with. She combined her knowledge of design from her Fashion Design course, with her practical side (gained from a practical, resourceful family) and set about converting furniture other people had thrown out.

Francesca finds a lot of her 'junk' by scouring newspapers for garage sales, or during council clear up time when people leave their unwanted goods by the side of the road. If she does spend money on furniture, it's often not very much. In fact the most she's ever spent is $160 for a 1920's red velvet lounge that she saw on the side of the road. Markets are also a great source, and many of her friends keep an eye out for interesting items.

The major investment in her furniture is time rather than money. She recycles furniture as a hobby, not a business, although she is considering forming one with her sister. Francesca also saves on costs by using inexpensive sample pots of paint, and fabric.

As a result of all this treasure hunting, the family double garage is full of projects just waiting to be worked on. Francesca's husband, Thomas moans every time she brings home another piece. But Thomas works in the music industry and has a passion for cd's, so when he gets rid of some of his collection, she might start throwing away some of hers.
