Mould can be one of the biggest problems when it comes to bathrooms - it seems impossible to get rid of. But there is a way! Our House shows how to get rid of ugly mould and keep your bathroom looking sparkling.

1
First we have to get rid of the existing mould on the top of the walls and the ceiling. Thoroughly remove this with household bleach (1 part bleach to 2 parts water) and a cloth. Use a bucket of water with the cloth, but continually rinse it out in fresh running water under the tap - otherwise you may spread the mould spores over other surfaces.

NB: Wear gloves and protective clothing when you do this. Open any windows and doors so the area is well ventilated.

2
Rinse off any excess bleach with clean water. Allow the surface to dry.

3
A coat of Bin paint will stop the existing mould attaching itself to the wall and is also a stain killer. This will ensure that none of the old mould bleeds through to the surface later on. Apply one coat of Bin with a roller and then allow 45 minutes for the product to dry.

NB: In a new bathroom it would not be necessary to apply a coat of Bin.

4
For a more permanent solution, Perma-White mildew - proof bathroom paint is next applied to the area. The paint does not actually kill mildew (so you must do a thorough job when removing it) but the special resin in it prevents it growing back.

It is a water based paint that comes with a guarantee to remain mildew-proof for 5 years when applied correctly and forms a finish that is unaffected by moisture. Two coats are applied, allowing approximately one hour drying time between them. Perma-White can also be tinted with various colours.

5
The bathroom window, which was previously painted shut, is worked on so that it can remain open where necessary to provide thorough ventilation.

6
To remove steam from the bathroom, an IXL-tastic system, consisting of heat, light and fan, is installed. It’s important to get rid of steam as it causes condensation to form which will encourage mould to return. This effective steam extractor will reduce condensation to a very low level. NB: You will need to wait 24 hours until you can use the shower, after the painting has dried. This project took about a day to complete.
