We look at ways to improve the use of these popular filler guns with some easy tips and techniques.

1
This is a clean filling method which helps cut down on the usual mess. Run a piece of masking tape over the length of the gap to be filled by the gun.

2
Cut down the centre of this tape to expose the gap.

3
Cut the nozzle at the tip of the gun off at about 30 degrees, making sure that the hole is about the same size as the gap you are filling.

4
Push the gun away from you when filling the gap. This forces the filler into the gap for a good fill.

5
For a flat finish, run a scraper over the filler (and tape) before it starts to "skin" or dry.

6
Remove the tape to reveal a smooth finish. If any feathery bits of filler waste remain, remove them by first dipping your finger into some detergent and then carefully smoothing out along the length of the gap.

7
Fillers can match most materials and surfaces. Aluminium grey silicon can be used to give the appearance of a stainless steel finish when dry. For a sharper, smoother finish, run an ice cube along the edge of the piece of work that is being filled.

8
Hard to reach spots can be reached by slipping a straw into the end of the gun nozzle. When you have finished, simply bend the straw over and secure with tape. This will prevent the filler from hardening, at least for a short while.

9
For a water-based filler, in order to prevent it from drying out, remove and clean the nozzle. Place a piece of cling wrap over the hole in the body of the filler and then screw the nozzle back on. This should last a while, but it is almost impossible to prevent any filler from hardening in the long term.
