When you buy a new set of chisels you'll find that although the blades are sharp, they are not razor sharp. The edges need to be honed at the correct angle, and a honing guide tool does just that.
1 Put the blade in, line up to the 30-degree mark, and lock into place. Now you are ready to sharpen.
2 Run the guide, containing the blade, backwards and forwards on the oil stone a few times (add some sharpening oil first) and then carry out a few strokes on the flat side of the blade (to get rid of any burrs). It is now ready for use.
