Some handy tips on how to hang your precious pictures.

Prints, photos and paintings can really add style to a room. Their arrangement can often have as much impact as the pictures themselves. Here are some pointers on how to show them off to best advantage.

1
A good way to display a family album is to spread all the photos along the wall of a study or living room. You can buy inexpensive wood frames for $3 to $6 (in different coloured stains) and then hang these either vertically or horizontally to suit the images. Some photos may need trimming. Do this using a sharp craft knife and a steel ruler to prevent the knife slipping and causing injury.

2
An effective idea is framing leaves and flowers. They look great hung in a grid, possibly adorning an entrance. This provides immediate impact and works well in a high traffic area.

3
Before you hang your pictures on the wall, lay them out on the floor first. This gives you some idea of how the finished display will look. You can even change your "perspective" by standing on a chair, and viewing from different angles.

4
Suspend your frames from the picture rails, attached to hooks on the back of each frame using fine fishing line. In this way, many pictures or photos, can be arranged vertically below one another.

5
Hang your pictures in places that are "out of the ordinary", like the wall surfaces at the bottom of stairs, etc. If hung at waist height, they tend to relate more to the room's furniture, whilst an elevated picture can draw attention towards a ceiling or other decorative feature in the room.

6
Use a spirit level to make sure your pictures hang straight and parallel to the floor. Arranging them above and below a centre line provides a striking contrast.

7
Leaves and flowers can be framed to great effect, as can children's paintings and crayon drawings. These can look attractive grouped together, as do "quieter" drawings, prints and photos. Remember that a picture frame should never overwhelm its content and should complement rather than be over bearing.
