Getting rid of leaves is one thing, but it's what's underneath that counts. If a section of your gutter has rusted through, it should be replaced, as the leaking water could eventually damage the foundations of your house. If the gutter is in need of some treatment, then here is one repair method.
Make sure you use a sturdy ladder and shoes with a good grip. Always be aware of where you are about to tread and test carefully first.
All leaf mulch and litter should first be scooped out. Using a wire brush, clean the inside surface of the gutter until you get back to the original metal.
Brush on a rust neutraliser to prevent future rust corrosion.
Next, seal the surface with a bitumen or rubber compound. For this example, a new Australian product in kit form is used. Sealant and sheeting are included. Start off by applying a primer of 50/50 water and Gripset 51.
When that has dried, roll on a thick layer of the compound. Cut out a sheet to fit so that it bends all the way up to cover the inside edges of the gutter. Press out the air bubbles so that the sheet is as flat as possible. This will stop the water flow from building up as well as helping the sheet to remain glued.
Once that has dried, brush on another coat to seal the compound completely. With this kit, everything can be easily cleaned in water. Sponge off any stray sealer spots.
When the repair work has completely dried, hose down the roof as a test to check that the water flow hasn't been blocked during the repair process. If you want to avoid this sort of repair job, prevention is the key. Clean out your gutters regularly and install a proper leaf barrier to prevent mulch build-up.
