| Water Pipe Trellis |
| An unusual way to hide an ugly outlook. |

The outlook from the dining room of this home is unsightly. It looks straight out onto the side of the house next door, and apart from the lack of privacy, makes the current owners feel claustrophobic.
Barcoo Landscapes have adapted the old idea of using a vine trellis to hide this ugly view. They've taken a modern approach, using galvanised water pipes and stainless steel wire. The trellis is a relatively simple construction and will last for many years.
1 For added weather protection, first coat your pipes with a layer of paint (Dulux Weathershield Gloss used here). Dig two holes about 2m apart. Cut the pipe using an angle grinder and then drill various holes at a suitable distance apart for the wire to pass through. Attach eyebolts to the two end posts and position the pipe frame in the holes.
2 Use galvanised saddles to hold them in place (bolted to your wooden fencing behind the frame). Attach the top bar (cross piece) with Downey joints to the two uprights and concrete in, using a level to make sure the uprights are at right angles. Before the concrete goes "off", check the uprights again with your level.
Tip
Don't make the concrete mix too watery. It should set in about 20 minutes.
3 Eye bolts and turnbuckles will be used in each of the holes in the uprights. Train the wire through the holes and fasten to the turnbuckles (attached to the eyebolts) at the opposite side using the swaging tool and screw to tighten. It is now ready for you to train your vines and creepers over the wires. This job should take no longer than a day to complete.
