Getting rid of doggy poo can be an enormous problem. Around four million dogs Australia-wide each deposit up to 0.5kg of waste daily. This often finds its way into the waterways and can cause health problems.
Worms R Us is one company that is using a unique disposal method to combat this problem.
Treated pine boxes containing a combination of worms and castings (rich soil) are used to break down the dog droppings into nutrient soil conditioner. The boxes are environmentally friendly and need little maintenance.
How it works:
The composting variety of worm has the ability to turn food scraps and garden waste into a rich plant food known as vermicast (castings), or worm poo, as it is more colloquially known. These castings can be used as a soil conditioner on gardens, farms or in pot plants. They are odourless and neutral in PH value, so they can be used on even the most sensitive plants.
How to set it up:
Place the unit in a cool, shady position in your garden on a piece of plastic or shadecloth. The castings (supplied) go in the bottom of the box, with 2,000 to 8,000 worms added on top. Scraps can then be thrown in, making sure the worms get some variety. The worms tend to double in number every couple of months, leaving the castings behind them as they move to the top of the pile. The front door of the box can be opened, and the nutrient rich castings removed for use on the garden. This does not disturb the worms that "work" near the waste surface.
What the worms can feed on:
Vegetable scraps Fruit peelings Tea leaves/bags Coffee grounds Vacuum cleaner dust (not if carpets have recently been deodorised) Hair clippings, human and animal Torn up newspapers, paper, egg, milk and pizza cartons (soaked first) Grass clippings Doggy poo AVOID: lemons, oranges, onions and garlic.
