Insulated houses can still lose as much as 25 percent of generated heat . If your home lacks insulation, the heat loss will obviously be much higher.

1
It's important to locate the source of cold draughts and eliminate them. Take a lit candle and run it along the skirting boards and other joins (not too close) and, if the flame flickers, you've found a gap. To fix it, all you need to do is seal the area with some gap filler. As there are a number of different products available, check with your local hardware store to make sure you buy the right one for the job. If you find large cracks (where the draught is sufficient to blow out the candle flame), check to ensure that there is no structural damage in the wall. This may require removing the skirting boards. If in doubt call a builder.

2
Loose windows are another entry point for cold draughts. An easy way to stop this is by sealing the windows with weather strips or weather seals. These are stick-on pieces of foam that are attached to the inside of the window frame. They come in different thicknesses, so make sure you measure the gap before buying. They also come in a range of colours to match the paint or surroundings.

3
The gap between the bottom of the door and the floor is another area that may be letting in cold air. You can fix this by attaching an adhesive or screw-in weather strip to the bottom of the door.

4
Finally, don't forget to keep doors closed, especially ones with exhaust fans open to the outside, as there's no point heating unused rooms.

These tips could help you save up to 15 percent on your next heating bill.
