| Choosing a Saw: Tricks of the Trade |
| In the workshop, there are saws and there are saws. |
 |
|
|
 |
1 Standard type: you can sharpen this saw yourself. However, it will only cut on the down stroke.
2 Hard-point saw: cuts on both the down and up strokes, but cannot be resharpened.
With hand saws, it is the number of teeth per centimetre that will determine what they do. The greater the number of teeth to the centimetre, the finer the cut. These saws also come with a variety of hand grips, including timber and rubber for non-slip gripping power.
Then there are saws for more specialised tasks:
3 Hacksaw: designed to cut steel and other metals. The blade from the hacksaw can be placed into smaller handles to get into those tricky corners.
4 Wallboard saw: used to cut plaster.
5 All-purpose saw: this saw has a blade that will cut metal, plastic, timber and plasterboard. When the blade is blunt it can be replaced. It also has an adjustable handle that locks into a number of positions to aid use in confined spaces.
6 Coping saw: cuts intricate shapes into wood and sheet materials. This is basically a hand-driven jigsaw with very fine blades.
Remember, when shopping for a saw, make sure you read the label carefully to ensure it is suitable for your purpose.
CARE: When storing saws, do not put the teeth metal to metal in the toolbox, otherwise you will blunt the blade.
