Dirty brass is an eyesore and most people do not have time to regularly clean their brass relics. The solution is a lacquering technique which preserves brass goods and eliminates the need for polishing and cleaning. After the treatment the brass only needs an occasional dust.
Siid and Janice Ejjimii run Mr Brassman in Sydney and have been in the brass business for over 22 years. Siid is originally from Morocco and this is where he sources his stock. He also acts as the middleman in metal restoration and can advise people on revamping/restoring any sort of metal including silver, gold, brass and copper.
Many of the items brought in to Mr Brassman have been handed down by relatives. People are curious to see whether their brass family heirlooms are worth restoring. If they are, Siid will refer them to Kensey Metal Craft, where his partner, Frank Rosada, will oversee the restoration.
At Frank's factory, the brass is stripped, washed with water and polished twice. It is then heated and lacquered (either dipped or sprayed). Most brass items are baled in an oven overnight to cure the lacquer. If time is an issue, the brass can be air dried.
The finish gives the brass an antique look and the treatment lasts for a minimum of two years.
TIPS FOR MAKING THE TREATMENT LAST
1 Keep water away from the brass
2 Keep the brass dust free. Dust will act as an acid and eat into the lacquer. Make sure the brass is wiped regularly with a soft cloth.
3 Be careful not to chip large brass items with the vacuum cleaner (it sounds obvious but happens often).
