Australian television enters the digital age on January 1st, 2001. It means that we can experience cinema picture quality and CD quality surround sound in our own lounge room, in addition to a range of multiple viewing options.
Digital television is a new way of transmitting the signal that carries TV programs. It offers a clearer picture, free from imperfections such as "ghosting" and it provides a higher picture resolution. It is also able to provide CD quality sound. The clarity and detail is amazing. There will be other features like the choice of multiple camera angles, for example, in a sports program, where viewers can choose which shots to look at, while the event is being screened live in real time. You will also have access to the internet, checking your e-mail while watching a program and also home shopping services. Digital television is currently available in the US and also the UK.
There are a few ways to receive digital television:
1 Set top converter. This box receives the digital signal and converts it for use on a conventional television.
2 A new digital television. These are similar to the sets currently on the market. However the screen will be a wide screen format, as in film, (16:9 ratio as against the current ratio of 4:3).
For those with analogue televisions who don’t switch over immediately, an analogue signal will be broadcast up until 2008. By that time, everyone will have to have either purchased a new digital television or a set-top box in order to receive the new digital signal.
~COST
The cost of digital televisions will depend on the size. The larger sets will be the first on the market, and after a while smaller ones will be released (priced from around $2,500). The television set featured has a screen size of approximately 105cm and is expected to retail for around $8,000. Set top converters will cost from $600 - $1,000.
