Gates that are hard to shut are more than just an inconvenience. They can allow your pet to get out and damage your neighbour's vegetable patch, and allow unwanted pests to get in.

Here is a simple solution that costs just a few dollars. In this example, a diagonal brace is going to be put on the back of the gate, from the top to the bottom corner, to prevent it from drooping.

1
First, chock up the gate so the latch lines up.

2
Two pieces of fencing wire are used, each with a loop on both ends. Self-tapping screws are then used to screw them to each corner. Screw one to the top left corner and the other to the bottom right corner.

3
With the wires attached, they can be joined in the middle using a turnbuckle, which will tighten the assembly. Just make sure before you use it that it is completely wound out.

4
Now just turn the centre part of the turnbuckle until the wire gets taut enough to hold the gate in the correct position. You may need a screwdriver to help you with those last few turns.

5
You may need to return in a couple of weeks to give a few tightening turns because the wire does stretch slightly. Using the turnbuckle, it is really easy to adjust.and no more angry neighbours!
