Two years ago, Richard Gray was at home putting some shelves up when his wife's girlfriend wandered past, commented that her husband did nothing around the house and asked whether she could hire Richard. And so Hire-A-Hubby was born.

The business has now grown to cover all of Australia and parts of New Zealand, and will soon be venturing into the UK, South African and Asian markets.

The Hire-A-Hubby franchise will tackle almost anything around the house that needs fixing, cleaning, replacing, trimming, cutting, removing or building. Some of the odder jobs they have done in the past include sitting with a pensioner who was being pressured by developers to sell, finding and removing dead animals from under houses, or simply changing the time on a clock. (When daylight saving starts, Hire-A-Hubby has a promotional offer of changing all the clocks in your home for $2!)

The list of jobs they are prepared to do is almost endless, including:
Gardening: lawns, gutters, pruning, weeding, mowing, etc.
Outside: paving, concreting, barbecues, landscaping, fencing, etc.
Inside: painting, tiling, plastering, installing appliances.
Cleaning: carpets, cars, linen, curtains, boats, ovens, etc.
Other: deciphering video manuals, removing unwanted animals and insects,
assembling furniture, walking dogs and feeding cats, picking up mail, etc.

Most clients are either single mothers or pensioners who don't have the tools, the ability or knowledge to do the job. They say a lot of pensioners use the weekly service visits as an opportunity for a cup of tea and some companionship. Other clients include double-income couples with little time for housework or maintenance.

Operating in small local areas, Hire-A-Hubby does not have an hourly rate, as Richard Gray, says the boys would move much slower if that was the case. Instead, each job begins with a quote, to give the owner a realistic cost for the completed work. Almost all the employees have some trade background and if a qualified tradesman is required, they call in a preferred supplier whom they regularly use to do the job.
