Meet Drain Savers, a plumbing company with a difference. It is run by Gary Mezei and was formed in 1989 in response to unhappy remarks from customers about the plumbing industry in general. Their main complaints were that plumbers looked messy and never cleaned up after themselves. Additionally, customers felt uncomfortable about letting strangers into their home.
Currently Drain Savers is based in the Sydney area, but Gary has expansion in mind. He feels there is a need for a national plumbing company and intends to sell Drain Savers franchises. At the moment he employs six full-time plumbers working in shifts 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Gary has set up guidelines for his plumbers to follow:
1 If customers have a plumbing problem they can call a 1800 number that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Within five minutes a plumber will call back; there is always a plumber available.
2 The plumbers are given grooming guidelines. They must be clean-shaven; wear aftershave; wear a clean, pressed uniform for every job; and carry a photo ID. Employees always have a spare uniform in the van in case they get dirty.
They arrive with toolbox and brochure in hand, lay down a "We Care" door mat and introduce themselves with a smile. Boots are taken off and special work slippers are put on.
3 They explain what they will do, confirm your understanding, then proceed with the work.
A checklist is given to the customer to see whether any other work can be done at the same time to save another service call (e.g. fixing cracked toilet seat, dripping tap, etc).
4 Plumbers clean up after they have finished, and must leave the area cleaner than when they first arrived, if possible.
5 Customers receive a "risk-free guarantee certificate" with each job. The plumbers are also guaranteed to arrive on time or your service call is free.
