| Who'd have believed that an apartment built beneath a concrete carport could be such a stylish hideaway? |

The owners managed to achieve a great look with a bit of forward planning. When the garage was constructed, the owners extended the slab to create a large space beneath. They had plumbing installed so that, 15 years on, creating the apartment was relatively painless.
For the overall design, an open plan was preferred. Without the help of traditional walls, it meant that the owners had to use some very clever tricks to distinguish the spaces. Areas have been divided in subtle ways, such as raising the floor level in the bedroom, as well as using a large painting between rooms to add privacy.
Taller ceilings helped define the bedroom, kitchen and dining areas, while a lower ceiling height was used in the living area to give it a cosier feel.
The apartment takes advantage of the aspect, light and vegetation through steel-framed doors and windows. The exposed concrete walls have been nicely hidden behind a streamlined kitchen and shelving system.
The bathroom is complete with washer and dryer to ensure the owners are fully self-contained. All in all, the owners are onto a good thing. After all, there are not too many apartments convenient to such a quick getaway!
