By putting a bulkhead over the front door and over the kitchen, halogen lights could be installed. The drop ceiling over the front door creates a foyer without taking up space.

By lifting the kitchen counter with posts and not filling in the space between the posts, a solid mass is avoided. Posts with a reflective surface will add sparkle. The tiles that were chosen for the kitchen were the same colour as the paint on the wall. This makes the space look larger. Bev had the floor tiles laid along high-traffic areas with a wavy border line between the tiled and carpeted zones, to protect the carpet from excessive wear and to create a reflection in the mirror, giving the impression that the area goes on and on. The tiled area also effectively extends the bathroom, where there is no room inside to dry yourself.

The lounge area doubles as a dining room and the coffee table converts into an intimate table for two. An existing pillar was helpful in creating a division between the bed area and the living area. A wall was formed by positioning a bookcase next to the pillar and the sofa was backed on to it.
The trick is to make the space look more interesting, to divert the eye. It's like wearing a stunning necklace when you have large hips. What it does is take your mind off the problem.
