Colour, comfort and creativity are the design principles behind this country cottage in the Blue Mountains. Once a tiny, rundown weatherboard house, it has been transformed into a cosy mountain hideaway by owner, Robert Anderson.

When Robert Anderson bought this weatherboard cottage in the Blue Mountains, the house was tiny, but the backyard had lots of potential. So, Robert set about extending the house and built a large living and dining room, almost doubling the size of the house. This connects to an open plan kitchen and timber deck, with extensive views of the garden.

Robert claims his simplistic approach to interior design stems from his background as the eldest of nine children growing up in country Ireland. He looks for simple, cost effective furnishings that will add character and charm to his home.

The house is decorated with an eclectic mix of furniture. If he falls in love with something, he buys it, not worrying about the label or designer. So dotted among rare antiques are commercial, factory made pieces and second-hand goods.

When it came to decorating his home, Robert decided he didn't want to run with a theme because they can become dated. He also didn't want to place limits on the furnishings and colours he could use in the house. As a result, the house is quite rustic, with Asian and Victorian influences.

When Robert started the renovation, he didn't have a particular look in mind but made decisions as the work progressed. The original plan was to close the ceiling, but when Robert saw the exposed beams, he changed his mind. Next, he applied the undercoat, realised he liked the washed white look and never applied the top coat.

Robert put a lot of effort into the kitchen, but the end result was unique and cost effective. The floors were covered with treated ply boards, then decorated with a simple black border. This cost little more than $200. Pine flooring was used to make the bench tops, while the original cupboards were given a new coat of paint.

One of the main features in the house is a huge canvas by local artist Gayle Pollard. The autumn scene almost entirely covers one wall and creates the effect of looking through a large window to the scene outside

Perhaps most impressive in Robert's house is his bold use of colour. The most obvious being red, which is used in the living and dining room. The furnishings use splashes of oatmeal, soft brown, apple green and black to add contrast to the red background. In the kitchen, black adds an Asian influence to the otherwise rustic look.
