The sweeping cliffs and valleys of Adelaide Hills is the perfect spot for a private country retreat. Monica Lysiak and Chris Coombs owned 36 hectares of lush bushland and wanted to incorporate a new home and bed and breakfast on the site, making the most of the fabulous bush views. With the help of architect Max Pritchard, they built a dramatic haven in harmony with the rural setting.

Monica and Chris didn't have strong ideas on the design of their new home so trusted the planning to Max as they thought he was down to earth, with interesting designs that had attitude and creativity.

They suggested building on a hill with a distant view to the sea, but Max proposed the less practical and more dramatic option of building on a ravine. This would give them a beautiful view of the gully and make the most of the distant views framed by the old gums. The site would also incorporate the surrounding birds, bush and animals yet not dominate the landscape.

The design is based around a courtyard with a connecting bridge and pond. This separates the two pavilions dividing the house and B&B. This is a lushly landscaped, sheltered area, while the pastures and natural vegetation grow beyond the house.

The house is a long, thin structure with four levels cantilevering over the gully. Every room has an outlook and the living area and deck jut out to blend into the tree tops

The living area is on two levels and houses the kitchen, dining and lounge. The lounge and deck are separated from the kitchen/dining by an open fire. Then behind the kitchen is the main bedroom with ensuite and robe. Another level up is Monica's gym which will eventually be a treatment room for her physiotherapy work. Then the laundry, Chris' office, the carport and main entrance.

The B&B wing has two bedrooms with ensuite and common lounge. There's a spa in the courtyard and a swimming pool. In future, they may build more remote cabins on the block for extra accommodation.

Materials used are stone from the Adelaide Hills, the windows are timber, the roof is made from corrugated iron. The cantilevered section consists of a light steel frame and glass. The place overall has a modern feel yet built out of traditional rural materials.
