Building a house by the beach can be especially problematic. Sites are difficult to work with and extremes in weather conditions need to be considered. Situated on the New South Wales Central Coast, this impressive holiday house was designed by architect Jon King. Because of the steep and rocky site, the original plan was for a traditional pole house. But Jon decided to do away with convention and build a unique, hardwood frame that has really become the main feature.

While certainly an ambitious project, Jon and his team embarked on the adventure and achieved great results. Each piece of the structure is made from several lengths of kiln-dried blackbutt and the whole lot has been bolted together like an old bridge. Needless to say the frame is extremely durable and shouldn't shrink or twist over time.

The house can accommodate a considerable number of guests and is a large open plan style. On the lower level there is a self-contained, two-bedroom apartment which the owners rent out. Then on the next level you'll find the kitchen, dining and sitting room.

The main living area is enclosed in a glass and exposed timber frame to make the most of the view while hiding power lines and the ugly roofscape below. The deck runs along the northern side of this level, sheltered from the weather that usually hits from the south. Extra wide eaves provide shade from the summer sun. The bedrooms are on the top levels to maximise the panoramic view.

Since construction, the home has stood up very well to the elements and there is a great history of hardwood structures really lasting the distance. We are still recycling bridges and warehouses which are up to 150 years old. This house has longevity in terms of materials and design as well.
