When the Dobbie family built their house at Green Point Estate near Lake Macquarie, they had two things in mind. Complementing the rural setting and environmental conditions while being distinctive from the street. The result is a stunning, environmentally sustainable home, that stands out from the crowd.

To accommodate the changing needs of their three teenage children, Susan and John asked that the house be divided into different living areas. An axis through the centre of the home aims to balance the formal and informal entertaining areas, as well as continue the division of living areas.

Dobbie House was designed along Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) principles. The long side of the house faces north so it captures the winter sun and warms the house naturally. Another ESD feature is a two storey chimney for Venturi cooling. This is a tube with a constricted throat used to control air flow.

Other environmentally friendly features of the Dobbie House include major masonry areas for thermal gain and special "through" rooms. The "through" rooms encourage cross ventilation by carefully aligning windows and airways. They have also used sunscreened glass to capture the winter sun and block out the summer glare.

The house is contoured, which is visible both inside and out. The contours of the house are defined by the contours of the land it is built upon, so the home is part suspended, and part slab on the ground. The entertaining areas flow between the inside and out.

The height, form and materials of the entry foyer are impressive and eye catching. However, the area has a more practical purpose. It is designed to circulate air by drawing it from other rooms and expelling it through high louvres.

The flow of air through the house is the focus of the design as it makes the home energy efficient. The kitchen and family room are designed to be isolated from the rest of the house and air conditioned separately. In winter, the north facing wall and tiles warm upstairs bedrooms.
