Near Point Arkwright on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Shirl finds Ian Jones and Jenny Polley's new beach hideaway. It's the ultimate destination for relaxing with family and friends while enjoying the sun, surf, air, birds and trees. Secluded from the world, this 15 metre wide block is filled with native trees and only a short walk to the beautiful beach.
The house is entered through curved white beech gates which grow from the paper barks either side of the driveway. Once inside, another set of beech gates reveal a Balinese courtyard. There are four interlocking pavilions connected by walkways which lead to the main entry and are topped by a lunette, which mirrors the curve of the gates.
A Balinese flavour prevails throughout the house along with the presence of beechwood. The floor is 100 year old ironbark and adds to the warm and inviting feeling of the home. The sunny wall colour is just one example of the importance of colour in the house which Jenny is responsible for. The combination of these factors produces a cool and breezy interior that's also homey.
The beech doors lead to the ocean side of the house where there is a sprawling timber deck, trampoline and a hibachi for toasted marshmallow nights. Upstairs is the master bedroom with fabulous views, red walls, a vaulting ceiling and king size bed. The master bathroom across the open verandah houses a spa and beech louvered windows opening to the treetops. Downstairs there is the kids' bunkroom and guest bedroom as well as a shuttered study.
Jenny and Ian have created separate spaces for a growing family, plenty of room for entertaining friends, an expansive master bedroom and a unity with their natural surroundings, all factors they hoped to incorporate into their magical getaway.
