The Horizon apartment block in Darlinghurst, Sydney, designed by architect Harry Seidler, was Sydney's A-list home of choice when it opened in 1998. Identities such as Mr Seidler, Harry M Miller and celebrity hairdresser Joh Bailey still reside there. But Joh is relocating to the country and has put his apartment on the market. Formerly a renowned party animal, he's planning to settle down and buy acreage with a big garden where he can stable his horses.
Joh has a hairdressing salon in Double Bay and a Hair and Day Spa in Martin Place, Sydney. Known as the "celebrity hairdresser", his clients have included Olivia Newton-John, Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista, Judy Davis, Carla Zampatti and perhaps the most famous, Princess Diana.
Working six days a week, he wanted his apartment dark and masculine so he could escape when he came home. Decorator Williamson Hall was commissioned to turn the all white quarters into Joh's retreat. Most of the apartment floor is covered in dark parquetry and has a hotel-style atmosphere. The entrance is straight from a glitzy nightclub with dim lights and a twinkly glitter wall and the hallway around the corner is a blue, corrugated plaster wall.
His bedroom is lined in peacock blue silk and it's 100% light proof. Great for the morning after a big night out. The walls of the bedroom are padded plus it's airconditioned. "I feel totally cut off from the world in this room — no sound, light, and a constant temperature".
