Reg visits building designer Yael K at her inspirational Perth home. While minimalist and functional, Yael's imaginative use of lighting and different textures has created a unique look which steers away from the typically sterile minimalism. From her hotel suite style bedroom to the steam shower, Yael has focused on lifestyle to achieve her vision.
Winner of a 1999 State and National Building Design Award, Yael designed the home as a daring and courageous piece. It was the first house, she designed for herself and she enjoyed being free from the constraints of a clients expectations or resale issues. The aim was for a contemporary yet warm feel to the home with an emphasis on function and practicality.
The house features a mixture of textures; Sand finished limestone, exposed natural limestone, cedar wood, Tasmanian oak floors and stainless steel on the staircase and appliances. These different elements combined with clever lighting counteract the sparse interiors. Yael has recessed lights for night lighting and also as a way to display her many South African artifacts, which are recessed into cube-shaped spaces.
The master bedroom and bathroom are luxurious and indulgent. The bedroom is an L shape with a sitting room, fireplace, wet bar and cedar hot tub. The bathroom's main feature is the two seater steam shower, which generates steam by water rather than hot coals and can be used for aroma therapy. There is also a pebble featured bath. Off the bathroom through frosted glass doors is the dressing room, fitted out like a shop.
Yael's philosophy centres around simplicity to enhance lifestyle. For example, she has an ironing board in the dressing room and two appliance cupboards in the kitchen. There is a laundry chute and the postman puts the mail directly into an office drawer from outside. The children, aged 19 and 21, have their own access and a large desk in each room. All vanities have a built in dustbin and the guest bathroom has built in soap dispensers and a sensor water system. There is also a well equipped gymnasium.
