Glen Ewin Estate isn't just a house. It's also a jam factory, sugar store, pulping and packing shed. The estate has great historical significance as the producer of South Australia's famous Glen Ewin jams. And it's also known for its connection to George McEwin, who was prominent in nineteenth century agriculture, horticulture and floriculture.

Jam hasn't always been on the table at Glen Ewin Estate. During the 19th Century the property was renowned for its wine. The first vineyard was planted in 1845 and less than 10 years later, their wine was produced commercially. But, the McEwins questioned the morality of making alcohol and in 1891, the wine was poured into the creek. So, they washed their hands of wine and started to make jam instead.

The production of jam was so successful that by 1864 they had to build a new factory. The jam was so good it won several interstate and international competitions. After the death of George McEwin in 1885, the family expanded the business and established another factory. And by 1929 Glen Ewin was a household name.

Jam is no longer in production, but the estate has many new industries to fuel the renovations. The jam factory is now used to store wine, and there's a general store in the old warehouse shed. The pulp shed is hired out to weddings, conferences and auction houses.

Bill and Wendy Wauchope bought the 70 acre Glen Ewin estate in 1991. It was in disrepair, with a severe damp problem through the house. The Wauchopes have been renovating and restoring the property since the purchase, and they still have a long way to go. Bill estimates they could have 10 years work ahead of them before the property is restored.

The house has been gradually upgraded since the Wauchopes moved in, and they are now installing a bathroom on the lower level. The restored home has a country farmhouse feel and Wendy has put her interior designing skills to work to create a cosy atmosphere.

Glen Ewin Estate may have a strong history, but the Wauchope family have certainly put their stamp on the property — their family crest is the keystone of the bridge.
