This American-Australian is world renowned for his marvellous entertainment prowess and passion for live performance. From hosting "In Melbourne Tonight" with Bert Newton to sportscasting rugby league, NBL Basketball, and American NFL, he is both versatile and engaging. Today, Shirl visits Don at his house and finds out what's next for Australia's "Lanky Yank".
Set on a large 925 square metre block with expansive, private gardens, this picturesque four-bedroom, two-bathroom residence is a traditional double-fronted brick cottage which has been opened up to create a spacious open plan living area flowing out to an entertaining deck, paved patio and lawns in a private parkland environment. Don has lived in this Hunters Hill home for 14 years. He's putting it on the market because of work and family commitments that will see him spending significantly more time overseas.
The lounge retains high ceilings and leadlighted windows of the original residence and leads through to a front area. The master bedroom on the ground floor features original decorative plaster ceilings and includes a modern ensuite bathroom. The kitchen has a large dining area and concealed laundry. French doors from the lounge and dining area open to the deck.
At the front of the house is Don's office which overflows with Don's awards and photos of himself with Sammy Davis, Princess Diana, Bert Newton and Don dressed as Laurel and Hardie. There is also a separate cottage which is Don's studio and a fantastic teenage getaway for his son PJ.
Don Lane first set foot in Australia in 1965. A roustabout nightclub performer, he was invited to fill in for six weeks as a host of the Tonight Show for the Nine Network out of Sydney. It was supposed to be a temporary sojourn down under but little did he know that within four weeks he would be offered a forty-week contract that would lead to him becoming one of the Australia's most enduring and high profile personalities for over three decades.
His innovative, "Tonight with Don Lane" was an instant hit and lasted for six years giving him the nickname the "lanky yank". Don had found himself a new home and when the Tonight Show finished he went on the road, splitting his time between TV downunder, the Sydney club scene and the show rooms of Las Vegas. When back in Sydney to perform in a star studded benefit for Cyclone Tracey victims, he decided to return to Australian television and linked up with Bert Newton for two episodes of "In Melbourne Tonight". Those two shows stretched out to eight and a half years and Don and Moonface became Aussie Showbusiness legends.
