Dale Jones-Evans and partner Linda Gregoriou, combined their skills in architecture, design and property development, to transform a factory into their unique abode. Their separate consultancies joined forces to convert the former fabric dye works to nine apartments. We take a walk through the one they call home.
Linda emphasises their vision was to build a unique and cutting-edge warehouse style conversion. The finished result demonstrates how good design can add value both socially and culturally. Their Eastern Sydney neighbourhood has also benefited from the conversion with the lane better-lit and therefore safer.
The apartment spreads over three levels and takes you on a sensory journey. The lowest level has a main and guest bedroom, both with ensuite. The living space is on the second level with kitchen, lounge and dining rooms and the top level, a roof deck.
Features include a suspended staircase with a moving handrail, two balconies opening to a trickling pond and straw mats for seating, and a discreet fireplace. The couple's collection of Australian contemporary art is highlighted by the colourless walls and floor throughout much of the apartment. The living room level however is an off-black colour as the East-West orientation makes it very bright.
Dale describes the living as serene; "The place stays incredibly cool because on the outside are two mechanical awnings acting like big eyelids." Linda agrees they will never tire of their "oasis in the heart of the city."
