The family room of Gill and Jay's house has the best views of the house, overlooking the garden and ocean, but is always messy and uninviting. What is needed is a practical but attractive entertainment unit to house the TV, video and stereo while removing the current sink and kitchen style bench. Jay's applying his carpentry skills to the job and aiming for a well-organised but appealing look to the room.
Firstly, Jay ripped out the old carpet and kitchen bench which was a major eye-sore in the space. The radiata pine framing was put up and the gas fireplace installed. A gyprock bulkhead was made and the walls plastered, sanded and painted. The cabinets were installed, white melamine with Tasmanian Oak veneer bench tops and door frames for colour contrast.
The bookshelves and shelving for the TV/Video was pre-made also using Tasmanian oak veneer and mounted. Finally two coats of Danish oil gives the finishing touches to the veneer and the fireplace was given a hearth and mantel.
Once the unit was complete, Jay lay the American Oak 'floating floor' and replaced the skirting boards. The furniture was then rearranged to centre around the fireplace creating a cosy, appealing room that's also very functional.
