Will Upjohn, a welder and steel sculptor, utilised his specialised skills to transform his work factory into a spacious home. Using recycled steel for the studwork combined with some new materials, Will worked for 3 years with a bit of help from some local tradesmen to create a unique and special dwelling for his growing family.
Will began his sculpting 10-15 years ago when his work on machinery construction gave way to a more creative view. His first few projects included metal sculpting for a London designer and an Airline sculpture and clock. He bought the factory 7 years ago as a base for his established welding business, which he shared with some painters. His work consisted primarily of tables, chairs, lamps etc, plus some gates and weather vanes for the neighbours.
As Will and wife Harry began their family, their residence became too small and the idea of converting the factory into their home became an appealing choice. The option of constructing townhouses on the sight was too big a job for Will who wanted an active role in the transformation of the property, so they set to work with help from tradesmen in the quiet street and community.
Will initially wanted to do as much as possible on the house himself but after consulting local council, good friends and architects Paul Connor and Antony Solomon were called in for consultation. Their relaxed approach and sense of fun were an ideal style for Will's needs and together they came up with a well-suited plan.
The frame was constructed out of steel, requiring the help of a local carpenter. Another tradesman also lent a hand to help speed up the process when Will was tiring of working alone. Most problems that arose were easily solved by Will's previous experience and logical thinking but personal motivation was challenging to maintain.
Working with steel was an ideal choice as Will had all the necessary tools and as it's reusable, the cost was kept down. After completing the project Will now likes to mix his materials to create his work. His current focus is fountains and he's thinking of building a shed out the back or taking up premises across the road to continue welding and sculpting.
