After the popularity of our last “crazy collector” segment, Our House takes a look at the world of John Loveday. He has a collection of over 6,000 beer cans and doesn’t even drink! John collects beer cans, beer coasters, beer themed matchboxes, beer key rings, beer mirrors, beer trays, corks, beer bottle tops and beer tap tops - basically anything associated with beer. Although this is a serious hobby, John only swaps and trades - no cash is involved. John does, however, value his collection at over $6,000.

John has been collecting for over 15 years. He blames his brother-in–law, because it all started when he went to visit him in Adelaide and he ended up coming back with 11 commemorative beer cans. This gave him the idea to start collecting. It wasn’t long before he had joined state and national beer can collectors’ clubs.

John says he enjoys it and never gets sick of it. There are always new beer cans being “printed” and so always more designs to collect. John also likes the look of his collection and has made a lot of good friends through his hobby. Another bonus is that together with his wife he travels and goes on relevant tours - all in the name of chasing those elusive beer cans.

John’s beer cans and associated goods are stored in two rooms in the house - the kitchen and the garage. In the kitchen are 1473 beer glasses and 900 beer bottles from around the world. The garage provides storage for over 6,000 beer cans from around 78 countries, as well as 1500 bottle tops, 413 tap tops, 200 trays, 44 beer mirrors, 100 beer towels, large beer signs, 200 key rings, 30 matches and about 40 beer manufacturing parts bought from breweries.

Strangely enough even though John collects beer cans, he doesn’t drink alcohol (7 years ago), due to an allergenic reaction to the hops in beer, brought on by an insect sting. The beer cans come from other traders, friends and family. He also attends beer can swap meetings every month. John trades with other collectors in this country, as well as the US, France, Germany and South America.

NB: If you want to start collecting, punch two holes in the bottom of a can to expel the fluid. That way it’ll still look complete and “full” when you display it.
