Apart from being a successful singer, Jonathon Welch has a passion for renovating houses. Our House visits his latest renovation project.
Jonathon Welch is part of the professional tenor trio “Tenor Australis”, which was formed three and-a-half years ago in Sydney. As well as being a talented tenor, Jonathon has a knack for renovating and decorating that has grown into a passion over the last 14 years. He usually moves into a house - one that looks like it needs to be demolished as a first step to improve it - and restores the home to prime condition.
Jonathon bought his current home, a 3 bedroom Federation style house, about two years ago. Jon doesn’t see himself ever renovating in a modern style, but then again he doesn’t quite rule it out in the future.
The renovation work took around 2 years to complete, but most of the structural work was done in the first 4 months, so that he could actually live in the house. Although he does not do any of the actual construction work, Jonathon comes up with the new design of the house, from the layout, to the landscaping, and does most of the time consuming painting and decorating jobs.
Every part of the house has been worked on. According to Jonathon it is basically a complete new house. Among items replaced are the floorboards, carpets and ceilings. He totally rebuilt the back section of house, and moved the existing kitchen and bathroom. An original ornate archway in the hallway remains, however, together with a fireplace in the dining area. Waratah motifs are a theme running throughout the house, as Jonathon is inspired by the Australian outback and nature. A visit to Ayers Rock inspired the bold red of the walls of the music room. He gets great satisfaction out of the whole process, and finds it is a tangible creative outlet - unlike singing.
Jonathon’s Musical Background
His home was a most inspiring atmosphere for a future musician, with Jonathon’s mother being a gifted singer and pianist. He began studying the piano at just 8 years of age, but soon realised his gift and love for singing. Jonathon studied singing at both the Melba and Brisbane Conservatoriums before continuing his studies overseas. He returned to Australia and made the first of many appearances with Opera Australia, including performing with Dame Joan Sutherland in “The Merry Widow”.
