Craig Maurer is the owner of this beautiful tri-level waterfront house sited on Sydney’s Northern Beaches peninsula. The north-facing home, an elegant construction of steel and glass, overlooks the sparkling Pittwater waterway.
The first thing that catches the eye is the amazing roof line. It’s made from corrugated iron and looks like a series of waves. Craig’s main brief to Peter Dalton, the architect responsible, was a design that was bright and sunny, taking advantage of the view, with the main living area to be built on one level, together with the main bedroom positioned on the top floor. Craig is also a severe asthmatic so the house features tiled surfaces, instead of carpet, along with a complete lack of curtains.
Design Features
Apart from blending with the water views, the home attracts natural light and provides excellent tree-top views. While the shape of the roof is attractive and unusual, it also serves a practical purpose. It was designed to allow winter sunlight into the core of the house. Craig says that at night “It’s like sleeping under the stars”.
The roof design is complex but was achievable due to the use of lightweight metal in the construction. Lightweight materials also meant there was no need for internal supports in the open-plan living spaces below. Supporting the massive 16mm thick reflective glass wall on the eastern side, is a screen of steel bracing, protecting the glass from strong wind gusts and elegantly framing the view of the trees below.
Being north facing, the summer sun can be harsh but to prevent too much from filtering in, he calculated the size and angle of the roof overhang and the up-turn of the most northerly-facing gutter so that it provided shade when needed. After a few months of living in the house, Craig discovered that the entertaining area was unbearably hot in summer. A remote control shade screen was installed, which slides across at the touch of a button, to combat this problem.
Peter Dalton says he’s been designing this way since the 70s as it’s the simplest and most sensible way to design homes for the Australian climate. This “wave-type” home design has won Peter the following awards in 1997; “The HIA Best Architect Designed House”, “Best Use of Metal Roofing” (BHP) and “Best Use of Glass” (Pilkington). The waterfront home also features a stunning one-bedroom “boathouse”, together with a deepwater jetty and slipway.
