Glenn Shorrock is known as one of Australias most gifted and successful singer/songwriters. He was born in Rochester, Kent, UK, in 1944. His career began at local youth clubs in South Australia where he used to strum a cardboard guitar and mime to a record player. When the record player broke down he had to rely on his own talents, and the kids loved it!
His first band, The Twilights, brought him national fame and they had eight consecutive hits during the 1960s. With his next band, Axiom, there were more hits. In 1977 Glenn formed The Little River Band and international success followed. They were the first group to be awarded a gold disc in the USA, selling over a million copies of Diamantina Cocktail.
Locally, The Little River Band was also a huge success. Within eight months they had three top 20 singles, Curiosity, Emma, Every Day Of My Life. They also had two top 10 albums, Little River Band, and After Hours.
In 1982 Glenn left the band to follow a solo career. Shows that he has worked on since then include The Mike Walsh Show and as host of the ABC Rock Arena. He was breakfast announcer for 2UW and also toured with The Rocky Horror Show national tour. He also developed his own type of cabaret at the Sydney nightclub Kinselas.
Glenn and his wife, Jo, have owned their four level Birchgrove waterfront home for 18 years. The house is set on 715 square metres of landscaped waterfront gardens and is named The Anchorage. It was built around 1890 by a seafaring timber merchant. As part of its traditional Victorian characteristics, sandstone and South Pacific timbers are featured throughout the house.
The main street level includes a tiled, formal entrance hall opening to a balcony, overlooking the garden and harbour. This level includes a double living area. Features include 12-feet ceilings, two marble fireplaces, original Kauri pine floors and bay windows.
Complementing the large modern kitchen is an indoor barbecue which has a full length exhaust canopy in stainless steel. Adjoining the kitchen is a spacious dining room with a black marble fireplace.
There are two doors leading onto the upper garden, one accessing a terracotta terrace. This is ideal for entertaining.
Stepping down from the marble balcony is a lower garden featuring a circular lawn and rock-flanked swimming pool, set in a natural sandstone cave. To provide easy harbour access, there is a modern ramp and pontoon.
The main level comprises one guest bathroom with water views and two guest bedrooms with an adjoining balcony. The master bedroom includes a unique elevated bathroom, together with a private balcony.
The fourth floor is an attic bedroom, and a marine-style gangway leads to a widows walk with spectacular 360 degree views.
Glenn and Jo bought the home in 1980 for $287,500, and have recently knocked back a $3 million-plus offer! But they are moving to a three-bedroom apartment in the historic Double Bay apartment complex Gladswood House.
