Andrew Parr began his extremely successful career at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, studying interior design and graduating in 1987. He then joined SJB (Synman Justin Bialek) Architects, and became director of interior design in 1994.
His design credits include prestigious buildings such as the Crown Casino (the Showroom), the Domain Apartment and U.S. Consulate in Melbourne, and well-known Sydney restaurants, MG Garage and Fuel.
Some of his awards include:
Winner, Commercial and Grand Prix Award, (for Clemenger Direct Response) - Dulux Colour Awards, 1994.
Winner, Interior Design Award, (offices of Grey Advertising, Melbourne) - Victorian Design Awards, 1996.
Best Residential Interior, Contemporary, (Domain Apartment, Melbourne) - Society of Interior Designers of Australia Award, 1997.
Grand Prix Award, Excellence and Innovation in Design, (for MG Garage) - Society of Interior Designers Award, 1998.
Andrew's home in inner-city Melbourne is a unique example of the concept of open-plan living in order to make your home appear larger. He believes that most people would prefer to have larger but fewer rooms, rather than many tiny and cluttered areas.
The house, which he designed, was completed in 1998, taking six months to build. SJB Interior Design were responsible for both the architectural and design work. The building measures just 17 metres by seven metres and contains three major spaces over two levels. Its design is based on a concrete-rendered steel-framed box.
Two sliding bi-fold glass doors open onto the front and rear courtyards, allowing much light to enter the building. Although expensive interior finishes are used throughout, pebbles are used as an economical courtyard surface. The bedroom and the living area form the main features, and the design embraces an open-plan style to make the best use of available space.
The ground floor contains a front and rear courtyard, kitchen (rarely used) and living room. Master and guest bedrooms are situated on the second floor. Here the timber floor is black-lacquered and gloss finished to provide a contrast to the ground level. The home could be said to fit the new demographic of the SPAM acronym (single professional at home rarely male).
The vanity unit is positioned in the master bedroom, with the shower occupying one corner. Andrew argues that if you're the only person using a space, why go to the trouble of adding an ensuite? The toilet is tucked away using wardrobe-like space.
Andrew also manages to blend the old and the new, with contemporary artworks hanging alongside an old grandfather clock. His grandmother's lounge suite was re-upholstered and chrome legs added for a modern look. Overall, the design has a sharp, clean feel, exuding much space and light.
