Built in a classic Georgian style, "Cheddington" occupies 3,100 square metres of "English parkland" on Sydney's North Shore. The house was constructed in 1910, originally for the editor of The Sydney Morning Herald. It has been cited as having a unique heritage listing.
The current owners moved in around 12 years ago and lovingly restored the property to resemble an English estate garden. A pattern of box hedges surround the back garden, complete with rose bushes framing a central fountain. Walkways and statues abound. The garden even contains the largest tulip tree in Sydney, as well as several other large European trees.
After passing through electronic security gates, the attractive "convict" ballast stones (late 18th century, used in the ships of the original settlers) are visible and pave the long driveway to the house. The original brick-framed entrance is impressive, with real crystal glass used in the windows.
The ground floor of the house contains several living rooms, including a music room containing a grand piano and cedar wall-to-wall bookshelves. A dining room, complete with high ornate ceilings, a large "gourmet" style kitchen and a family room are also situated on the ground level.
An enormous cedar staircase sweeps up to the second level, containing four bedroom suites, all with bathrooms and saunas. The two largest have their own sunrooms and balconies. A picturesque conservatory, built three years ago, completes the picture.
There is also a double lock-up garage, off street parking, security system and gardeners quarters.
