David Ansett fell in love with this 1950s style apartment. Although it looks quite ordinary from the outside, inside he has created the perfect replica of an environment straight from the rock 'n' roll era.
The flat comes complete with the original kitchen and cooker which has a fold out grill and plate warmer. The bathroom is a pink palace with pink bath, sink, toilet and bidet. The walls and floor are lined with small black and pink tiles. There is a wooden veneer concertina door that divides the living areas and glass doors that have hand etched designs.
David first began collecting pieces from the fifties era at age 17, mainly because the items were cheap and had a sense of style about them. Many years later he has built up a large collection of memorabilia which includes an original radiogram (vinyl records-no CD's here), cooking utensils, a Computermatic TV (no computer chips), an orange divan together with matching table and chairs, armchairs and five paintings from the era. Most of these pieces were bought for under $40.
His favourite and most expensive piece is a lounge by Australian designer, Douglas Schnelling, that he bought two years ago for $1,200. This super fifties pad contains three bars, although David insists he not a hard drinker. One consists of a 60cm globe that opens up to reveal bottles of spirits inside a rotating container.
David has just purchased an Edwardian house which is smaller than their current apartment and so reluctantly has decided to part with selected items from his collection.
