Kit or project homes are a convenient and economical forms of housing but the designs of many kit homes have been lacking in imagination, individuality and style. Queensland company Capricorn 151 saw an opening in the market for an affordable kit home using quality architecture, so they engaged award-winning, veteran architect Gabriel Poole to develop the system.
Capricorn 151 is the merging of two forces; Gabriel Poole and Australian Building components Pty Ltd, whose management team collectively have over 100 years experience in construction, supply and manufacture of building products. Together they bring design innovation and quality building systems to an exciting and affordable range of homes. Gabriel Poole says the purpose of architecture "should be to house people in surroundings which will enrich their lives, and respond to their personal wants and needs. Each house should be tailored to the individual or family concerned." His main concern is to raise the standard of housing in Australia.
A Capricorn 151 design may be customised for individual clients. The home Our House visited was designed and built with the client's wishes in mind. The brief she gave the company was for a house that suited the site and was built with the least possible damage to the surrounding bushland. The features the client requested were; large open decks in the treetops; open plan living, integrating the outside and inside and one master bedroom, a study and separate guest quarters.
Features of Capricorn 151 Designs 1 Some designs have garage roller doors to create breezeways. If used correctly they will draw air through the entire house. The use of clear roller doors enables natural light to be used in its full capacity. Roller doors also provide security. 2 Energy-efficient design is a feature in Capricorn 151 designs, with extensive use of glazing to capture maximum sun during winter. Alternatively, in the summer months, carefully positioned louvered windows promote natural cross ventilation, which cools the house. 3 Small pivoting panels set into the walls of rooms in strategic positions promote efficient airflow making ceiling fans and air conditioners unnecessary. 4 Design innovation and quality building systems will work whatever the location or climate. Taking into consideration space, light, breezes and aesthetics, a shelter is created that blends in with the client's particular environment. 5 Inspired by the tropical Queensland coast, Capricorn 151 designs feature maximum light and ventilation. Variable wall thickness with additional insulation, double glazed windows, insulated floors, foam or lightweight concrete panels and masonry claddings are some of the features that make these designs work for any climate whether it be arid desert, tropical coastline, forest hinterland or alpine ranges.
