After years of living in an ordinary, suburban house Gianna and Massimo Alessio commissioned architect Ivan Rijavec to design their dream home. The Alessios gave Rijavec the freedom to be creative and adventurous and they now have a house that stands out from the crowd.
Rijavec says his aim is to make his clients happy and is to engage people's imaginations. He was gratified when Gianna called their place the 'Happy House' as it was exactly what he had designed it to be. Rijavec also praised the Alessios for having the confidence to do something new.
Gianna specified that the kitchen was to be a central feature of the house. She didn't like the idea of not being able to mingle with guests while she was cooking. From the kitchen you can see into the backyard and the houses beyond. The dining area, one of Gianna's favourite spaces, looks over a reserve where the view is spectacular, especially in winter when the fog rolls in.
The 13 skylights are a major feature of the house. Three are plain, opaque skylights positioned in the master bedroom and laundry. The remaining ten are coloured yellow, green and blue, shaped like sails and tears. During the day these skylights glow and then at night the house changes when the coloured light is no longer there.
An interesting feature of the house is the curved walls and roofline. The Alessios say that you cannot walk in a straight line which takes a bit of getting used to — even the hallway is curved. |
