Adorned with imaginative furnishings, vibrant colours and decorative mementos of overseas travels, this Copacabana cottage on the central coast of New South Wales is loaded with character and artistic style. Rebecca meets owner Tina Danckert.
The charming weatherboard cottage is surrounded by tropical gardens and sits on a hill, overlooking the ocean. The exterior is painted to reflect the sea with tones of mauve, blue, green and white. The dramatically coloured turquoise entrance ornamented with ceramic tiles made by Tina, offers a taste of the colour and creativity inside.
The houses the Danckerts had lived in before had plenty of colour so when building their new home they decided the interior would be sharp and white, but it wasn't long beforel their love of colour took over. Tina says the great thing about paint is if you don't like a colour you can paint over it.
The bedrooms are painted in vibrant purples and blues, which reflect the ocean views beyond. The lounge room is apple-green, the family room is washed with blue, the kitchen has a splash of pink and the dining room walls have been painted a brilliant combination of solid blue striped with green.
The open-plan kitchen has a central horseshoe shaped bench, separating it from the vibrantly coloured dining room. A ladder, rescued from a junkyard is used to hang baskets and is secured to the ceiling with nautical fittings that suspend it above the granite benchtop.
The main lounge room steps down from the kitchen/family room area. To contrast with the bright apple-green walls, the high ceiling with its exposed beams has been painted white to create a spacious feeling. Cedar framed glass doors open onto a lovely garden vista. Tina and Brad love the idea of merging indoors with the outdoors and have created three courtyards as an extension of their home.
Whether it's old soft-drink boxes made into shelves or handcrafted ceramic and terracotta tiles; Tina's artwork is evident in every room of the house including the courtyards. In one of the courtyards she has created a trompe-l'oeil out of an old window which now frames a ceramic beach scene.
In their daughter's bedroom, another salvaged ladder was given new life with a coat of blue paint. It hangs from ropes attached to the ceiling and serves as a wardrobe. The ladder-cum-wardrobe was initially a temporary solution until the Danckerts could afford built-ins, but it worked so effectively they decided to keep it.
Built from scratch seven years ago, the house looks finished although it seems the job will never be complete. Often, colour is changed or added, new pieces of furniture are collected, new building projects started and Tina is always generating new artwork. With constant changes and additions the 'Colourful Cottage' is always evolving.
