Making maximum use out of limited space, professional Sydney architect Christopher Cole has completely transformed a tiny Georgian style dwelling into a contemporary home.
Chris was given much freedom in his design and he set about changing the existing Georgian style and implementing a more contemporary design. His main brief was to “make it beautiful and stick to budget”. From design to completion the project took about a year.
The once tiny two bedroom house was given a larger outlook. Chris opened the place right up and in order to create a sense of spaciousness he decided not to build to the maximum “FSR” (floor space ratio) – ie. he did not build right to the edge of the boundaries. He built on clean, uncluttered lines to provide simple and carefree living. The house had to be comfortable and still have a feeling of richness. He achieved this by using soft surfaces, lots of simple colours and rich fabrics. The original swimming pool was filled in to provide a central grassed courtyard flanked by a double height atrium made from recycled iron-bark timber – an entertaining area of significance that is often used by family members. One unique feature in the kitchen is the use of hand-painted tiles on the splashback – each showing an important part of the owners’ family history.
With the number of guests sometimes creeping up to 30 people, Chris has cleverly made the house ‘expandable’ – outside areas integrate with those inside and the inside easily opens up to the outside.
