An innovative Melbourne couple, Mick and Fiona Reid, have created their own company called Chooks and Vegies. They are helping to promote farming in suburban backyards taking a step back in time to when most people had a vegetable garden and a few chooks.
1 Mick and Fiona offer a design, construction and consultation service for keeping chickens. They also set up decorative and functional vegetable gardens. They can advise you on what's best to grow in your area, how to build a compost heap and where to place your chicken shed.
2 They provide kits for three designer chicken houses: the Rustic, Federation and an A-frame model. The A-frame chicken shed is the most popular and is the cheapest and easiest model to set up. It takes approximately 15 minutes to erect and has enough room for three standard birds or five bantams. It costs $350. The kits include a removable floor, nesting box, roost and access hatch. All the pieces are marked and come with detailed instructions. You can also call Mick and Fiona if you come across any difficulties and they'll help you out over the phone.
