| We visited what could possibly be Australia's healthiest house. |

While it looks just like any other house, this could be Australia's healthiest residence. According to owner and builder Jan Brandjes, a healthy house is one with healthy air. The house has a sturdy steel frame that has been wrapped in a "breathing" plastic membrane. Essentially, the house has been sealed almost completely. The membrane allows moisture to escape from the house while not letting moisture in.
Jan has installed an Energy Recovery Ventilator in the house to act as the house's "lungs". On the one hand, the ventilator draws in fresh air to the home, on the other, it exhales polluted air out of certain areas in the house, in particular the bathrooms, laundry and kitchen.
Normally, there are over 250 chemicals used in the construction of a house. By eliminating as many of these chemicals as is practicable it is possible to achieve a better quality of air. For example, the walls of the Healthy House have been painted with a Breathe Easy paint by Dulux. This paint contains fewer chemicals than other products and is therefore healthier. Jan laid Alloc flooring instead of laying carpet. This is a high-press laminate floor that does not use glue when being laid. It is completely sealed and therefore doesn’t need to be polished, sanded or stained.
A healthy house is great for people who suffer from allergies such as dust mites and fungi, as these are largely eliminated.
Jan's experience has been gathered from all over the world, in particular North America. He is the first person to introduce this concept in Australia.
