Wallalong House is one of the great historic houses of the Hunter Valley. The large property includes a cellar, stables, servant's wing and grand parlour. And the garden is listed by the National Trust as Victorian. Wallalong House is a step back in history and Reg has been invited for a tour.
The land on which Wallalong House stands was granted in 1823 and settled immediately. The existing house was built by convicts during the late 1830s, but later remodelled. It has 24 rooms, including six bedrooms and maids and servants' quarters.
Wallalong House has maintained many of its original features. The sitting room still wears its 1880s wallpaper and the library is fitted with old cedar features. The property includes stables and a coach house wing. The stables were purchased at the Crystal Palace Exhibition, London in 1854.
The house sits on 10 acres, with sweeping views over the farmland and flood plain below. Before its subdivision, the property was used for farming. The current owners have meticulously restored Wallalong to its former glory and where possible, they have kept its original features in tact.
Wallalong House is proof the old and new can work together. Wallalong has been modernised into a comfortable home, without losing its olden days charm.
