It was a tall order for architect, Russell Hall, when his sister asked him to design a house which took up as little space as possible, leaving the garden as a sanctuary for various wildlife.
Built along the lines of a silo, this structure stands five storeys high and is accessed by a fretwork of staircases. The simple lines of the Tower House are complemented by stained-glass windows that create rainbows on the walls.
Oil-filled prisms at the top of the house also cast a kaleidoscope of colour onto the pale yellow interior. A house of reflected shapes and colours, its few bare walls feature large artworks in the absence of natural light.
Apart from the specified use of the out-of-town location, Russell's brief stated several preferred internal features. These included a bath and bidet, dressing and sewing roos, few doors, no curtains and an unobtrusive kitchen. The floor plan extends over five levels, starting with the dungeon, with its two bedrooms, bathroom and laundry.
The entrance on the second level opens onto the dining room and kitchen. Another flight up to the living room. Keep climbing to the master bedroom, dressing room and ensuite, and finally, at the top, is the sewing room. Russell's unique design has attracted interest from international architects impressed by the single skin structure.
Russell's sister loves living the fairytale life of Rapunzel. Undaunted by the stairs, she marvels at her unique home and the rich mix of wildlife below.
