Dattner house
It's hard to imagine this beautiful warehouse was only recently a rundown brewery.

For many of us, there's nothing quite like a cold beer on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Well, the Nicholas Dattner's taste for beer has been taken one step further; he's set up house in a kiln. But, this kiln isn't filled with dried hops and beer, it's decorated with his magnificent hand-made furniture.

When Nicholas Dattner bought this kiln it was rundown. It was neglected, rustic and filled with pigeon poo. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Nicholas set to work cleaning and renovating what would soon be his new home. This included the unpleasant task of scraping away 150 years of bird poo from the old building.

The apartment was a kiln until just eight years ago and was previously owned by United Carlton Breweries. Now, it is a beautiful white apartment that Nicholas Dattner can be proud to call home. The kiln is part of a large cube that rises six storeys. The top is a giant fireplace and the walls are 70cm thick. It has a corrugated iron ceiling with scalloped arches in the kitchen. The ceiling is also domed and brick bolted with two large chimneys.

Nicholas completed 70% of the restoration himself and sourced most of the materials. Best of all, the project cost just $100,000. He constructed the kitchen by hand using a combination of American Oak and Yellow Stringy Bark.

Moving furniture into the apartment is no easy task as it has to be carried up a lot of stairs. So, Nicholas is currently building his dining room table inside the apartment. The finished product will be a 10-foot refectory style table and it won't have to be moved an inch.

A talented wood craftsman, Nicholas Dattner loves native Australian furniture. His kiln is a showcase for his amazing timber pieces. Of course, he has a number of showrooms open to the public where his handiwork is displayed for sale. And as a lover of design, Nicholas' Melbourne showroom is a masterpiece in itself — it's the gutted remains of the old Star Theatre.
