An old cordial factory is not the most likely place to create your home in. However when Alison Hall set eyes on her unit space, she knew this was exactly what she wanted. Only one problem remained, she didn't know anyone — builders, architects or designers, who could help her.

Luckily a friend introduced her to architect Peter Christoff. Their ideas corresponded perfectly and they set about designing the unit. Inside the factory was external walls, rubble and a roof.

Their first step was to familiarise themselves with fire restriction laws and damp courses. As warehouses are made without such safety regulations, you have to implement them yourself.

Alison and Peter converted the factory into a 'boulder house'. Large grey boulders feature throughout the apartment, in particular the boulder wall, which greets you after entering through large French Provincial wooden doors. A concealed door in the boulder wall leads to a small room, they call "the grotto". It's used as a spare room with bookshelves and has fragments of remaining blue stone walls from the factory. Inside the grotto, is another door, leading to an indoor garden with a pond feature.

Back to the entrance way, boulders line the stairway to the living room. The living room floor is littered with perspex windows, looking down to the indoor garden below.

Boulders lead the way, again, up to the kitchen. The kitchen has the only outside windows, large long doors. Alison created the illusion of more windows, by placing a metal reflector at the far end of the room.

A spare room above the bathroom and bedroom is dominated by a solid brass panel, which breaks up the space and can be moved horizontally.

The main way Alison met her challenge was by pursuing her vision, and employing an architect and designers who shared her tastes and influences.
